Dear Maher,

I hope everyone has made it through the mall traffic! It has been very hectic, which is a great sign for the retail sales in Frisco. Keep in mind, the more retail sales in Frisco, the more revenue for the City. That, in turn, helps keep the property taxes low.

Saturday night is another fun evening at Frisco Square with Polar Express playing on the outdoor screen. Bring warm blankets and chairs and enjoy a family evening out. The Movie will start at 6:00PM. Sunday evening features a Storyteller weaving "Twas the Night Before Christmas". For details, visit Frisco Square!

I was recently asked by a Citizen about ways they can get involved in our community.  They were curious about how they could learn about Frisco and start making a difference.  Of course, there are many ways to be involved in our community.  So many, in fact, that it would take me some time to track all the opportunities down and list them.  We have many worthwhile organizations.  Frisco Family Services, Frisco Association for the Arts, Heritage Association of Frisco, Chamber of Commerce, Miracle League of Frisco, Collin County Community College Education Foundation, Frisco Education Foundation, Volunteer North Texas and the list goes on.  I thought I would being by listing some of the programs available through the City of Frisco or Local Partners that help you gain an understanding of how the City of Frisco Operates.

-- City Hall 101.  While the next start date has not been announced yet, the first class has just graduated.  This is a free program that details how your City operates and where your tax dollars end up. You will visit and learn just about every department in the City of Frisco.

-- Frisco Citizens Police Academy:  Another great program that focuses on the Frisco Police Department. Become a graduate of this program and move on to the Citizens on Patrol (COPS).  Learn how our Police Men and Women do their job and help protect our community.

-- Citizens Fire Academy: Ever wonder what it is like to be a Fireman? After graduating from the Citizens Fire Academy, you will have a full understanding of what it takes to be a Fireman in Frisco.

-- Senior Citizens Fire Academy: Designed for our seniors, another program that helps you get a full understanding of how our Fire Department works.

-- Leadership Frisco (Chamber of Commerce): Operated by the Chamber of Commerce, another very worthwhile program that is very intensive and full of useful information. You will not only learn about the City of Frisco, but also many of the partners involved in our community. As a previous chair and board member of this organization, I highly recommend it.

-- Cert Classes (Community Emergency Response Team):   This is an all-risk, all hazard training program that helps our citizens become better prepared to respond to emergency situations in our community.

-- Attend Mini-Town Hall meetings (those rotate through different communities)

-- Attend Town Hall Meeting (Quarterly):  This is your chance to learn about many of the current events in the City along with the status of the many projects that are ongoing.

-- Volunteer with the City of Frisco. There are many volunteer opportunities with the City.

-- City Boards and Commissions.  You can also apply to be on one of the City Boards or commissions. If you have the time and passion to serve your fellow citizen, look into applying for one of the many boards that are available in the City.

From my family to yours; I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

  • Crime Alert Cards

  • I thought I would include this report that I received from our Police Department. The period covered is from 6/13/06 through 12/19/06. Crime Alert Cards are filled out by our police Department when they notice the incidents listed below. Typically, the homeowners are mailed a notice with this information.

    Total Cards Completed 1397

AT&T JOINS THE WINTER GAMES OF TEXAS AS TITLE SPONSOR

The Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, the City of Frisco, and the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Welcome AT&T to the Winter Games of Texas held in Frisco January 13-14, 2007

Frisco, TEXAS (December 8, 2006) – The Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau (Frisco CVB), the City of Frisco, and the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) are pleased to announce that AT&T has committed to the title sponsor of the Winter Games of Texas – to be known as 2007 AT&T Winter Games of Texas. The games are an amateur Olympic-style event featuring a multitude of sports for athletes of all ages. This is only the second annual Winter Games which generated $1.2M in economic impact to the City of Frisco in 2006 with 2,900 athletes and 13,000 spectators participating in the event.

“AT&T is proud to support the endeavors of the City of Frisco and its quest to bring excitement and community involvement to the city,” said Deb Peoples, AT&T vice president and general manager, Dallas-Fort Worth. “We look forward to events like the Winter Games because they, in many ways, encompass what AT&T stands for — connecting families, friends and neighbors.”

By partnering together to create the AT&T Winter Games of Texas, TAAF hopes to increase amateur participation in its events and expand its membership base by adding additional sports to its existing amateur competitions. The 2007 AT&T Winter Games include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, volleyball and wrestling. The City of Frisco and the Frisco Convention & Visitors Bureau is a natural host to this event with its combination of world-class sporting facilities such as Dr Pepper Ballpark, Dr Pepper StarCenter, Pizza Hut Park, Warren Sports Complex, Frisco ISD Natatorium as well as its quality, family-oriented environment.

2007 welcomes a new public event – “Celebration of Athletes” held on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 6 p.m. at the FISD Memorial Stadium just north of downtown Frisco. This event celebrates the spirit of sportsmanship and community with a traditional Olympic-style parade of the athletes, presentation of past American Olympians, lighting of a 15’ cauldron and fireworks show. In addition, there will be children’s entertainment, bounce houses, face painting, real “snow” village and more! The event is free with a donation of a canned food item benefiting Frisco Family Services. Advance tickets and food collection is available at Capitol One locations in Frisco and at GattiTown in Frisco.

“We are very excited to be hosting the AT&T Winter Games for the second straight year.  This year, five new events have been added because of the excellent sports venues we can provide in Frisco as well as the relationship with our outstanding marketing partners.  This event will generate excellent economic benefits for our businesses and community and will allow our citizens and visitors to view amateur athletics at its best," said Mayor Mike Simpson.

“The City of Frisco is grateful for AT&T’s support of the 2007 Winter Games of Texas. Their endorsement signifies the quality of the positive impact these athletes and their families make on our city,” commented Marla Roe, Executive Director of the Frisco CVB. “In 2007, we expect 5,000 athletes and 20,000 spectators to visit Frisco during the 2-day event,” continues Roe.

Added Mark Lord, Executive Director of TAAF, “We are thrilled to enter our second year with the Winter Games in Frisco.  We are also excited about expanding the TAAF relationship with AT&T for both the Winter and Summer Games of Texas.  The AT&T Winter Games ensures AT&T recognition as the leader in supporting amateur athletics in Texas,”

Flu Season Underway in Denton County

December 20, 2006- The holidays are upon us, and in Denton County, so is flu season. Denton County Health Department’s hospital surveillance systems have noted an increase in influenza (flu) like illnesses. Area physicians have also started to see an increase in patients diagnosed with influenza. Dr. Jessica Gullion, Chief Epidemiologist for the Denton County Health Department says, “I think we can officially say that flu season has started in Denton County, but we are still at the beginning.” Schools around Denton County are reporting sporadic flu activity. Dr. Gullion notes, “It is not too late for people to receive their flu vaccinations.” Denton County Health Department has flu vaccine in both our Denton and Lewisville offices and will be distributing those during normal business hours on a walk-in basis.

Flu shots will be available for the general public, but DCHD especially encourages those at high risk of complications from the flu to receive a flu vaccination. Those individuals that are considered high risk include:

    • Children 6 months-5 years
    • Adults over the age of 50
    • Persons of any age with chronic medical conditions
    • Persons living in nursing homes or other long term care facilities
    • Pregnant women
    • Persons living with high risk individuals (such as a new born baby)

The cost of the flu shot is $20, payable in cash only. Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP will also be accepted as payment.

Vaccinations are not the only way to help prevent the flu. Here are steps you and your family can take to stay healthy this fall and winter:

    • The simplest and most effective way to stop the spread of the flu and many other diseases is to wash your hands often with soap and water. Wash for at least 20 seconds. (Tip: have children sing “Happy Birthday” twice while washing.) If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Rub sanitizer in your hands until they are dry.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when people touch something that is contaminated with germs and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs can live for a long time, some for 2 hours or more, on surfaces like doorknobs, desks and tables.
    • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs cause illnesses like the flu. The flu usually spreads from person to person when an infected person coughs or sneezes and the droplets from the cough or sneeze move through the air and get on the mouth and nose of people nearby. Always cough or sneeze into a tissue and throw it away to prevent the spread of the droplets, and then wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, cover your cough or sneeze into the crease of your elbow. If you cough or sneeze into your hand, make sure to wash them immediately.

Dr. Gullion also adds, “If you feel ill, stay home from work and keep sick kids home from school or daycare. This will help to reduce the spread of all illnesses this winter.” For additional information or for specific treatment options, contact your health care provider.
