CALENDARS

For those that are using my Community Calendar, I have made some modifications to make it more user friendly. I have turned on the ability for anyone to enter their own calendar events. If you are part of an organization that has a function or event coming up, feel free to enter it. It will not display right away as all new items must be approved before being made public.  This calendar is a community calendar and not for business or private usage.   You can find the calendar HERE on my web site or directly on the calendar web site

Warrant List

The Collin County Sheriff's Office is now posting a searchable list of more than 35,000 active warrants on the county's web page. The list covers active arrest warrants from Class-C misdemeanors to First-degree felonies, and includes fine amounts, bond amounts and the name, physical description and the last known address of an offender.

The Active Warrants List includes offenses from fishing without a license to unpaid traffic tickets to burglary and other felony crimes that have been committed in Collin County. Late last year, the Collin County Sheriff's Office began posting the county jail's Current Inmate List  online as well. Both can be reached from the Sheriff's Office section of the website

Greeting,Maher Maso

This is going to be a very busy weekend!  I'm torn between several worthwhile community events.  At least I am not going to hear from anyone in Frisco that they had nothing to do this weekend.  Between Movies in the Square (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Lost in Abstractions and Farmers Market, that should just about cover tonight.

Saturday Night is going to be difficult with Monte Carlo Night, Health and Safety Fair, Police vs. Fire Basketball Game and Frisco Farmers Market, you have some choices to make.

The Frisco City Council meeting that is normally scheduled for the 1st Tuesday in August (August 7th) has been moved to Wednesday, August 8th, due to National Night Out events.

Frisco lost a good man this week.  Richard Scoggins was a long-time Frisco resident who served our community in ways too numerous to list.  You can see the direct results of just one of his passions by looking at any school in Frisco. Richard served on the FISD Board of Trustees for 15 years and as its president for 6.  Our prayers go out to his family as they mourn his loss and we are thankful to them for allowing us to be touched by his life in so many ways. He was a good role model to me and served as a mentor to many people in Frisco.

Speaking of good men and mentors, Congratulations are in order to Collin College President Dr. Cary Israel for being named the 2007 Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Western Region by the American Association of Community College Trustees.  The Board, who nominated Dr. Israel for the award, is extremely proud of this achievement.  Dr. Israel will be presented with the award in late September at the ACCT Leadership Congress in San Diego.

I have been honored have known Dr. Israel and work alongside him in serving our community.  Under his Leadership and the Leadership of the
trustees, Collin College has become one of the premier Colleges not only in Texas, but the United States.

The
Collin College Education Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony was held last night and I had the privilege, as one of the Foundation Board Members, to announce some of the scholarships.  What a wonderful feeling to see the smiles in the faces of the students receiving these awards.  Over 300 students received scholarships from private dollars amounting to approximately $260,000.   That is double the number of scholarships given out in just four years. Yet, the need is much more than that and not all the students needing help will be able to receive it.  I will write about our foundation in a future newsletter an I hope someone reading this is inspired to help a student.  If you are interested in providing a scholarship or endowment, I am at your service. Just contact me and I will get the ball rolling.

Congratulations to the Shops at Starwood for being named for Three of D Magazine's best of 2007.  The Three winners were:  For Best Eating: Kotta Sushi LoungeFor Best Drinking: Josephine's Wine Bar and BistroFor Best Shopping: Little Heiress

newsletter titleA Frisco resident that I know sent me this picture. It seems he is selling this beauty.  So, why do I have it in my newsletter?  It should be pretty obvious; it makes my newsletter look that much better  :-)

For those that know me, you know I can't help showing  a picture of car like this, even though it is yellow. After all, we all know that red is faster  :-)    And yes, he is serious about selling it.  If you are interested, just e-mail me and I can give you his contact info. NO, I am not receiving a comission (although 30 minutes with the car would not be turned down by either party).

Val and I continue to receive so many words of encouragement and support from all of you regarding my recent annoucement. We are truly blessed to be part of this community!

Have a safe and happy weekend!

Maher Maso

Frisco National Night Out

This popular community event has been listed in the last several newsletters and is on the community calendar.  Here is a recap of events and information:
newsletter title

12th Annual City of Frisco Green Home, Health & Safety Fair  & FPD vs. FFD Charity Basketball Game on Saturday!

Green Home, Health & Safety Fair:
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM @ Frisco Commons Park, 8000 McKinney Road. Admission is Free. Includes a record 70+ Exhibitors/vendors, raffles, door prices, FC Dallas tickets, kids play areas, and the list goes on.

FPD vs. FFD Charity Basketball Game: 7:00 PM to finish at Frisco High School Gymnasium.  Tickets are $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for bids benefiting the Special Olympics.  Free FC Dallas tickets to the first 100 through the door, Desperado Dancers, sports mascots, food, fun and silent auction.

Also, the Frisco PD needs your help documenting the National Night Out parties.  Please E-mail or mail your pictures (digital is fine), party flyers (electronic copies are preferred, but hard copies are okay), estimated number of party attendees and any other pertinent information you wish to pass on (such as party highlights).

This information is very important for the 2007 Frisco National Night out post-project report.  This report is a direct reflection of our community's hard work and efforts in support of this very important crime prevention initiative.

Many party coordinators have asked about police/fire visits during NNO and how this works. Barring any emergency that may pull away police/fire personnel, all REGISTERED parties should receive at least one visit from a police and fire official. I provide the fire department with a list of block parties and they make their own assignments, so I don't know what type of fire apparatus will be visiting your party.newsletter title

In the event you know someone that is having an NNO-related party/get together (even if it's just a few folks), please ask that they register their party with the city.

Also, please DO NOT use vehicles to block off streets. If you don't have cones, the portable trashcans and/or recycle bins provided by the city may be used to block off the street.

If you have any questions, contact Officer Robert Monts with the Frisco PD at rmonts@friscotexas.gov or call 972-292-6139.

Frisco Citizens Police Academy

[Many of our residents have asked when the next CPA class will be held. Now is your chance to sign up. See the note below from our PD -- Maher ]

The Frisco Citizen Police Academy (CPA) is an interesting and informative program that educates citizens who live or work in Frisco about our police department, its divisions and practices. Instructors are officers and employees of the Frisco Police Department.

The Frisco CPA meets one night a week (on a Thursday) for ten weeks and includes an optional two day training session for the Citizens' On Patrol program (COPs).  The CPA is offered twice yearly (one session in the fall and another in the spring). The program has recently been restructured to involve more "hands-on" activities, such as: actual crime scene processing, hand to hand defensive tactics, pistol shooting, high-risk traffic stops and much more. Although each member is encouraged to take part in the scenarios, participation is optional and any member may choose to be a spectator in any portion of the CPA.  The purpose of the CPA is to give our citizens an idea of just a few of the many day-to-day functions in the Frisco Police Department. In order to graduate from the program, participants may not miss more than two classes (not counting the optional firearms class or COPs training).

The next CPA is scheduled to begin on September 13, 2007, 7:00 PM. Classes are held at the Frisco Police Department (training room), 7200 Stonebrook Pkwy.

Once you have completed the CPA curriculum, we hope you will want to become part of the Frisco Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association and/or Frisco Citizens on Patrol. Both are active police/community support and educational organizations (go to www.fcpaaa.org for more information).

In order to attend you will need to fill out an application for the CPA along with the waiver of liability. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (972) 972-292-6134 or by e-mail at gcovington@friscotexas.gov.   After your application has been reviewed and processed, your name will be placed on a list (applications are processed on a first come basis).  In February applicants will receive a letter containing specific information about the status of their application along with additional class information.

Since the class size is limited to twenty-five (25) participants we encourage you to enroll as early as possible. Once again, thank you for your interest.

Save the Date

Clothe-A-Child

Clothe A Child is a community project that works with Kohl's to clothe underprivileged kids in Frisco. This is an event that you won't want to miss!

In partnership with several Frisco churches and Kohl's, Starbucks, Krispy Kreme and Sonic, Clothe-A-Child Frisco has set a goal of clothing 700 children this year. Each child is identified by the Frisco Independent School District as one who would benefit from this program. Saturdays, October 13 and 20 2007, the children and their families will come to Kohl's in Frisco where each child will be given a voucher for $100 to be used towards clothing items. Each family is matched with a volunteer to assist in shopping. At least 500 volunteers are needed to make this program a success.

Visit the Clothe-A-Child web site to learn more and get involved!  I have welcomed the volunteers at this event for the past few years and it is awsome seeing so many of our citizens lending a helping hand. Won't you get involved?

Infrastructure Updates

In this section, you will find the most up-to-date information available on roadways and infrastructure in and around Frisco.  To keep this information as up-to-date as possible, I maintain links directly to the reports sections of the different entities.

NTTA:

Congratulations to the new Executive Director that was recently appointed by the
NTTA Board of Directors.  Mr. Jorge Figueredo has direct experience with road projects and tollways.  Congratulations are also in order for Mr. Rick Herrington who was promoted to Deputy Executive Director.  You can read more HERE.

I know many of you are wondering when the Tollway extension is going to open.   As of now, the project is still on track for opening in late September. I know it does not seem like it, but NTTA has been pretty good about meeting deadlines.

  • Dallas Parkway Southbound Service Road between U.S. 380 and Eldorado Parkway is scheduled to open on Sunday, August 5th.  Crews will work to open lanes in the morning and the new lanes are expected to open by Sunday afternoon.  Please use caution as motorists adjust to the new lanes.
TxDOT:

I can't keep up with the changes on 121 and cross streets, such as Preston.  As I wrote about in the last newsletter, traffic alignments are changing on a regular basis and temporary closures seem to be common. Preston and S.H. 121 seems to be an especially challenging intersection.  If you find lanes are being closed, my recommendation is to find an alternate. Legacy, Parkwood, Coit, Custer and the Tollway all seem to work better at times.
Hearings on transfer of SH 121 to be held July 24, 2007

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will conduct two public hearings to receive comments from interested persons concerning the proposed removal from the state highway system and transfer to the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) of a segment of State Highway 121.

The segment is located from just east of Business 121 to the west side of FM 2281, a distance of 7.39 miles, in Dallas and Denton counties. The non-tolled area is just south of the existing SH 121 Tollway currently being run by TxDOT since its opening last year.

TxDOT's meetings will be on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 6:00 p.m., at Coppell Middle School - North, 120 Neches Trace, Coppell, Texas 75019 and Thursday August 9, 2007, at 6:00 p.m., at City of Lewisville, City Hall Council Chamber, 151 West Church Street, Lewisville, Texas 75057.

State law authorizes TxDOT to lease, sell, or transfer a toll project or system that is part of the state highway system, including a nontolled state highway or a segment of a nontolled state highway converted to a toll project, to a governmental entity that has the authority to operate a tolled highway. In North Texas that agency is the NTTA.

Descriptions, maps and drawings showing the proposed portion of State Highway 121 to be transferred and other information concerning the proposed transfer are on file and available for public inspection and copying by contacting Bill Compton, P.E., Texas Department of Transportation, 4777 E. US Hwy 80, Mesquite, TX 75150-6643, telephone 214-319-4489.

Friday, August 3 through Sunday, August 12, the Caring Schoolhouse will be at Stonebriar Centre, collecting donations for students who are in need of back-to-school supplies and clothes. At the schoolhouse, apple-shaped tags contain information about an underprivileged child in the area and list his/her back-to-school needs. Shoppers can pick an apple tag from the tree, purchase the necessary items and bring them back to the schoolhouse as a donation. The Caring Schoolhouse is sponsored by Christian Community Action, a nonprofit organization. Stop by Caring Schoolhouse on the lower level near Sears.

Stonebriar Centre is at Preston Road and SH 121 in Frisco. For directions to the shopping center, visit
