Tomorrow, Saturday May 12, is the Frisco City Council election. There are six candidates running for two empty seats. See my newsletter archives on my web site (http://www.friscofirst.com) for a list of the candidates and their web sites. Also, please read the Mayor's letter at the end of this agenda about the importance of voting. Depending on whether there is a run-off in place 4, I may be making decisions or I may be sitting on the sidelines watching :-) I have truly enjoyed serving you and will continue to be involved in our community. The Importance of Voting
Every year about this time I start wondering what the turnout will be for our general election. There have been two times in the last three years (2004 and 2006) where we did not have a council election, because the incumbent council members did not have opponents. This year is a different story and with both Mayor Pro-tem, Maher Maso (Place 4) and Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem, Bob Allen (Place 2) at their term limits and no longer able to serve, there are six candidates running for the two vacated spots.
This is the time of year where it is important for our citizens to be come acquainted with the candidates, their platforms and their knowledge of the issues facing our city. You will have opportunities to go to Meet the Candidate nights and to read responses to questions that are presented in on-line forums and newspaper reports. You will also find that candidates have no problem in meeting voters face-to-face and answering questions. It is important that you hear not only the issues or concerns that they may have but also their recommendations on how these will be solved.
The next three election years will be critical to our city as the entire City Council will turn over due to the term limit provision of our City Charter which allows for two three year terms. Many new residents to Frisco do not know about this provision that limits council terms to six years. Next year, Council Members Matt Lafata and Jim Joyner will go off of council, as will me as the Mayor. In 2009, Council Members Joy West and Tony Felker will be at their term limits. This is not uncommon to turn an entire council over a three-year period because the limit under our charter has been six years, but up until 2002 the terms were two years.
Voter apathy has been a concern of cities all over the state and we have had concerns in Frisco, all though our numbers are often higher than surrounding cities. In the past as few as 8-10% or less of the registered voters have decided who would serve our city. In the last Mayor election in 2005, which also included two Council Member positions and some important Charter Amendment propositions, the turn out was 14.39% of our registered voters. We have over 45,000 registered voters in Frisco with about 15,000 in Denton County and 30,000 in Collin County. I urge you to exercise your right to vote and to help decide who will lead this city in the future. If you watch all of our elections, whether it is local, state or national, far too many people do not vote and yet this is a privilege that we have by living in America.
Early voting starts on April 30 and goes to May 8 at three different locations. Election day is May 12 and you may also vote at three different locations. All the sites for Early Voting and for voting on May 12 are shown on the city’s web site at www.friscotexas.gov Go to the Government header and then scroll down to Elections to see the hours and locations for the voting locations and hours.
Most important, have a voice in your government and exercise your privilege to vote. This is a right we have fought to protect throughout the history of this great nation.
